I had spent the night with my granddaughters while their mother was on a business trip. My husband and I were getting ready to leave in the morning while the girls got ready to take their respective buses to school.

Suddenly we got a call for my 16-year-old granddaughter from a teacher she is close to. In an angry voice she asked to speak to her. When I gave her the phone, the teacher started to yell at her so loud that we could all hear what she was saying. She accused B. of having stolen her cell phone. My granddaughter got very upset and denied the charge. The teacher refused to believe her and told her she better show up with it or else. B. begged us to come with her. The last thing I wanted to do was to confront this problem, but I embraced Jesus Forsaken and took her to school. On the way I reminded a very angry and worried B. that we need to forgive our enemies.

"Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you." (Lk 6:27-28)

I told her it was an opportunity to show others how to stay calm and under control in a difficult situation. We prayed together then made a pact to keep Jesus in the midst. We asked to speak to the assistant principal and presented him with the problem. He took notes in great detail then asked if he could invite the teacher to join us to which we agreed. He was gone for some time before returning with the teacher. The first thing the teacher said to our great joy was that the phone had been found.

Then the assistant principal asked the teacher to tell us why she had been so upset. She had been told that her son had been in a traffic accident and was in the hospital. She immediately wanted to call him and her daughter but the only place she has their number is on her cell phone. She felt desperate when she couldn't find it. On arriving at school and making inquiries, some one said they thought they had seen B. with it.

She begged us to forgive her and gave B. a lot of praise for the way she had conducted herself under these trying circumstances. The result is that they have become even closer.
