Historically, the question of Christian unity was first raised by missionaries who were announcing the Gospel to people who did not know Christ, and yet they were divided in different churches. The scandal of disunity was dreadful. In 1910 the World Mission Conference was held in Edinburgh, Scotland, to help missionaries forge a common spirit and coordinate their work.

In commemoration of the hundredth anniversary of this important moment in the history of the ecumenical movement, the promoters of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity invited the churches of Scotland to prepare the 2010 Week of Prayer. To honor the missionary commitment of the Church, they ask us to listen to Christ's final words before his ascension, "Thus it is written that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things" (Luke 24:46-48).
