In 2011 the Focolare marks its 50-year milestone in North America with anniversary celebrations throughout the United States and Canada.

The Center for World Catholicism and Intercultural Theology at DePaul University, Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A. sponsored World Catholicism Week 2010 from April 20 to 23, a conference on the globally interdependent dimensions of the Roman Catholic experience of faith.  Two days were dedicated to Benedict XVI’s encyclical on economic globalization, Caritas in Veritate.

A first lecture on the Economy of Communion in Freedom was held at the Catholic University of America (CUA) in Washington DC on October 21. There were over sixty (60) students in attendance (marketing, business, and theology majors) as well as a few outside visitors including a journalist from the Catholic News Service, an owner of a construction company, and a couple aspiring entrepreneurs.

For those who have contributed in countless ways to the construction of the new dining hall at Mariapolis Luminosa, many may eagerly await news on how the long-awaited project is coming along. Follow the progression of the project through our photos.

The passing of an inspiring life lived for unity and interfaith dialogue

A great friend of Chiara Lubich and of the Focolare Movement she founded, Imam Warith Deen Mohammed, leader of the largest constituent of Muslims in America, will be greatly missed. He died on September 9 in his home in Markham, Illinois, at age 74.

CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy Benedict XVI urged the members of the Focolare movement to continue on the path laid down by their founder Chiara Lubich.

A NEW TOOL FOR THE EVANGELIZATION OF CHILDREN AND OF THE YOUNG AT HEART

The Cube of Love kit has been developed for the evangelization of children and for inspiring students to put the Gospel into practice. Its aim is to combat sources of violence, bullying, anger, tension and loneliness among primary and middle school children and to make their relationship with God and others ever more personal and dynamic. The kit has been tested across the globe including the USA and Canada with visible positive results. It has resolved conflict and violence in schools and created relationships that have led to a culture of caring and kindness.

Faith and Values

It is a movement of Catholic laypeople. It reaches out to all faiths. It is based on the principles of unity and the Golden Rule. It works with other groups on social-justice issues. Its impact was felt most profoundly when its founder, Chiara Lubich, died at age 88.

International Sports Event for Peace Across the Continent Planning for a global youth event on May 10

May 10 will mark the second Run4Unity, a worldwide event organized by the Young for Unity, teenagers of different cultures and religions from 182 nations. Through this 24-hour run, they will cover the earth with a rainbow of peace and unity. The binding force that motivates them is the commitment to live and spread the Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do to you” (Lk 6:31).
