Muslims and Christians recommit to persevere in dialogue
Chicago Focolare community, guests and friends celebrate an evening of Prayer for Christian Unity
Braving bitter cold and the heaviest snowfall of the season, 130 members and friends of the Focolare came together in warm, deep communion for an evening of prayer for Christian unity. The event was held at the KAM Isaiah Temple, Hyde Park, Chicago, in a meeting room where the Torah scrolls are kept.
Muslim and Christian Youth working together for the Homeless
Fifty years ago it would not have happened. During Christmas, 2010 Muslim young people from the Ephraim Bahar Cultural Center and Christian youth of the Focolare Movement engaged in an interreligious experience of “dialogue of life.” Living out together one of the principal tenets of both religions—to recognize the presence of God the poor—we demonstrated how the world can be changed for the better.
"Suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:2-3)
On the evening of October 26, 2010 at the Holy Name Cathedral (Chicago, IL) more than 500 members of the area’s ecclesial movements and communities met around Francis Cardinal George for an annual appointment that has become like a yearly family reunion. The day’s incredible wind storm did not deter them. Rather, it brought to mind the Pentecost gathering of movements in Vatican square on May 30, 1998, when 300,000 gathered around Pope John Paul II. In her welcome, Mary FioRito, Executive Assistant to Cardinal George and the Cardinal’s liaison to the movements, saw in the Chicago wind storm an encounter with the Holy Spirit.

be a family “If I should have to leave this world today and you were to ask me for one last word that sums up our Ideal, I would say “Be a family...” I would have Jesus in me repeat to you: “Love one another... so that all may be one.” Chiara Lubich, founder of the Focolare Movement, Dec 25, 1973
