One evening in January, I arrived at the airport and began the two hour trip home. It was dinnertime so at a drive-through restaurant I got some coffee, a cheeseburger and fries.

I drove on, happy to have something to eat and drink. When I stopped at a red light, I noticed a woman standing in the dark under a bus shelter not far from my car. It was well below freezing--about ten degrees — and this woman was bundled up so that only her eyes were exposed. Trying to stay warm, she was moving up and down on her feet next to a grocery cart filled with belongings. The words of Jesus came to my mind: "You saw me hungry and you gave me no food," and "Whatever you did to the least of my brothers you did also to me." As I glanced at the traffic signal, the thought came to me that I could give her my warm cheeseburger and fries. There were cars behind me and beside me, so I quickly rolled down my window, leaned over and, extending the sack of food, I asked her, "Would you like this?" The woman nodded, came over, took it from me, and said, "Thank you!" Before the light turned green, I had just enough time to say "Have a nice evening, dear," and to roll up the window.

I thought about buying more food, but decided not to stop again. I drove directly home.

As I entered my kitchen, I was surprised to discover that my husband had prepared dinner, a dinner I would not have been hungry for had I eaten!

I shared this experience with a friend who said, "An act of love allowed you to love your husband by eating his dinner! An act of love led to an act of love!"
