The first pioneers tell the story!

September 14th, 1961 - By Sharry Silvi

There was a man in the office who used to yell and scream. He was a nervous man and an important one. He yelled and screamed at me. He told me all day long that I was stupid and he finally convinced me of it. All I could do was to smile back. Sometimes the idea of going to that office was so unbearable that I wished the whole UN would disappear. Other times while riding in the subway I would ask God to take that cross away from me and then suddenly the thought would come; “don’t do it Lord because I haven’t fully lived it to the end.”

One day after about 3 months, he asked me a question: “Why don’t you ever answer back?” he continued, “If you keep smiling at me when I yell at you, you’ll drive me crazy. Why do you do it?” I was silent and a little embarrassed. But he kept asking, “Tell me why?” I had to tell him the truth, “It’s because I’m trying to be a Christian,” I said. A Christian! It sounded like a bomb, a bomb that never exploded. A silence followed. The man kept looking at me. I didn’t know what to say or what to add. ”Would you say that I’m not a Christian?” he asked again. I didn’t answer. “What should I do to be a Christian?” he continued. I answered “Christianity is to love.”
