As announced by the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI has chosen Annamaria and Danilo Zanzucchi of the Focolare Movement to write the meditations for the 2012 Way of the Cross, which will take place during Good Friday observances on April 6th at Rome’s Colosseum. This year’s meditations will acknowledge the family’s vital role in sanctifying the world.

Annamaria told Vatican Radio about the Holy Father’s request:

"Our first reaction was one of surprise and I must also say a little fear in the face of this great mystery that is the suffering of Jesus, having to verbalize it seemed too difficult for us. At the same time, we are profoundly grateful to the Pope for choosing the theme of the family for something so profound and so strong. Expressing our participation in the redemptive suffering of Jesus is also a gift from God, because it gives us the opportunity to reflect on this reality and we are grateful indeed to the Holy Father, who made this choice."

In an interview with Living City, Danilo explained that their vocation as married members of the Focolare is “to be a presence of love in society and in the Church, to bring the way to sanctity into the streets, the workplace and in everyday life.”

Annamaria and Danilo Zanzucchi have been married for fifty-nine years, 5 children, and were among the closest collaborators of Focolare founder Chiara Lubich. They helped establish the Focolare’s New Families Movement and were members of the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for the Family since its inception.

The New Families Movement began forty-five years ago and has attracted over 800,000 families in 182 countries with its universal and hopeful message that the family can be a source of peace and fraternity for society. Its goal is to strengthen families and to contribute to a new culture of reciprocal love.

Since 1985, the meditations for the Way of the Cross in Rome have been written by various people rather than using the traditional texts. Blessed John Paul II chose theologians, bishops, priests and men and women religious – even a group of international journalists covering the Vatican – to prepare them in the past. The Zanzucchis will be the first married couple entrusted with this task.
